Blackwood Wins Forever 39 Match Play
Championship |

Jill
Blackwood of
Burlington
won her first Iowa Women’s Forever 39 Match Play title. Blackwood shot a 4-over
39 in the qualifying round, earning the 4th seed in
the Championship Flight. Blackwood
defeated Ila Gilbert of Ankeny 3 & 2 in her first match
and cruised through her second match, closing out Annette
Hoover of Indianola 5 & 3.
Blackwood’s final match was played against Karol Hare
of
Johnston
. Blackwood was 1
down to Hare on the second hole, but proceeded to win the next
two to take the lead. Hare
then parred the seventh hole to square the match. The two halved the 8th
and then Blackwood sealed her victory on the final hole to win
the match 1 up. Blackwood
commented, “It was a great match. We each played well
until the very end. I’ve
been in the final match of this tournament five other times,
so it finally feels great to get a win.”
Indianola
Country Club played host to the 2007 Iowa Women’s Forever 39
Match Play Championship held September 24 & 25. The tournament is
limited to female contestants that maintain a residence in the
state of
Iowa
and are age 39 and older.
This year’s field consisted of 69 women. A 9-hole qualifying
round was played Monday morning and the players were then
seeded into 9 match play brackets. Quarterfinal matches
were played Monday afternoon and semi-final and final matches
played on Tuesday.

Iowa Finishes 26th at USGA State Team
Championship |
| The Iowa team finished
tied for 26th at the 2007 USGA State Team Championships.
The team was led by Lisa Meshke of West Des Moines and Jenny
Graeser of Waterloo who both carded a three round total of
242. Teammate Julie Bush of Cedar Rapids shot 269 for
all three rounds. The team used Graeser's scores in all
three rounds of the competition. The team used Meshke's
scores in rounds one and two and used the score of Bush in the
final round. On
the men's side, the Iowa team finished in 25th place.
Justin Schulte led the way shooting a three round total of
3-over 219. Jon Brown was next with a total of 7-over
223 while Nate Dunn fired an 11-over 227.
The State Team
Championships are a biennial competition in which each state
sends a team of three golfers. The competition is over
54 holes in which the best two of three 18-hole total scores
count for each day. The tie for 17th at the 2005 State
Team marked the best finish for a women's team from Iowa while
the best finish for the men was 10th in 2001.

The 2007 Wife-Husband
Championship was held September 6-9, 2007 at Burlington Golf Club.
The par 72 course played 6,122 yards for the male players. Two rounds were played over four days, with couples playing either Thursday and
Saturday or Friday and Sunday.
131 teams competed in the Regular Division and 13 teams
competed in the Super Senior Division (couples with a combined age of 135 and
higher). The
tournament was a 36-hole modified alternate stroke event. Each partner teed off,
the best ball was chosen and alternate shot was played through
the hole.

Julie and Mike Davidson of Ankeny
shot a final round 2-over par 74 to claim their second Iowa
Wife Husband Championship Title.
The Davidson’s shot a two-day total of 145, giving
them a 2-stroke victory over Rob and Paige Lynch of Ames. The Lynch’s
shot a second round score of 72 and finished in second place
at 147. Marianne
and Mike Briggs of Burlington
also shot 74, including six birdies. The Briggs’ carded a
150 for the tournament and ended up in third place. Mary and Greg Kroeger
of Waterloo
came in fourth with a 151.

Play concluded for the
thirteen Super Senior Division couples on Saturday. In the Championship
Flight, Marianne and Jerry Sevier of Donnellson took medalist
honors shooting rounds of 79 and 87. Judy and Arlen Blank of
Cedar Rapids finished in second place with a 179.
Burlington
natives, Vera and Lee Fedler won the First Flight shooting a
two-day total of 196. The
runner-up spot went to Lynda and Jack Jackman of
Marion
with a 203. |

Wakonda Club Team of Des Moines successfully defended its
Gross Division Title at the 2007 Iowa Women’s State Team
Play Championship held Monday, August 6 at Ames Golf &
Country Club. Wakonda
Club shot a team total of 233 to win by 3 shots over runner-up
Ames
Golf & Country Club. Defending
Gross Division Individual Champion Fiona Watson of Wakonda
Club once again claimed medalist honors shooting a 2-under 71.

Meadowbrook Golf & Country Club Team of Hartley took first
place in the Net Division shooting a team total of 213. All Vets Golf Club of
Clear Lake took the runner-up spot with a 218 and Des Moines
Golf & Country Club finished in third carding a 220. Dawn Burns of
Meadowbrook Golf & Country Club won Net Division medalist
honors shooting 90 for a net score of 67. |

IWGA Names 2007 USGA State Team
Members |
| The IWGA has made its
team member selections for the 7th Bi-Annual USGA State Team
Championship. Representing Iowa will be Jenny Graeser of
Cedar Falls, Julie Bush of Cedar Rapids and Lisa Meshke of
West Des Moines. Cindy Whitmore of Ankeny will also be
attending the Championship as team captain and first
alternate. Kathy Fortune of Rockwell City and Jill
Blackwood of Burlington are second and third alternates,
respectively. The 2007 USGA State Team Championship will
be held September 18-20 at The Club at Carlton Woods (Nicklaus
Course) in The Woodlands, Texas. |

Hanson Takes Women's Amateur
Championship |

Kendra Hanson of
Forest
City
captured her first Iowa Women’s Amateur Championship
Title shooting even par on the final day at Burlington's
Spirit Hollow Golf Course.
It wasn’t until Hanson hit her third shot on the par
5 eighteenth hole to six feet away that she finally felt she
had won the championship.
Hanson commented on her win, “This means a ton to me.
I struggled with my game last year but worked really hard this
summer on my short game. It feels good to get a victory
today.” Hanson, who will be a senior
this fall at Iowa State University, finished with a 1-over par
three day total of 217. Runner-up
was Kansas State's Abbi Sunner of
Ankeny
shooting a 220 and University of Iowa golfer Jill Marcum of
Clarinda finished third with a 224. After shooting an impressive
opening round of 3-under 69, Jenny Graeser of Cedar Falls came
in fourth carding a three-day total of 226. Former State
Amateur Champion Beth Duenow of St. Angsar had her third
career hole-in-one when she aced the 125 yard fifteenth hole
during the second round of play. Duenow shot a 238 and
finished in a tie for 19th place. The
2008 Iowa Women's Amateur Championship will be held at Bos
Landen Golf Club in Pella.
