Club Dues for 2009 Due Soon!

Club Membership applications are due by October 31, 2008 for 2009.  Club dues are $60 and application with a check are to be sent to the IWGA office.  By sending in the dues by October 31st, this will ensure that your club is listed in the 2009 IWGA Directory.  IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU FILL OUT THE APPLICATION FORM COMPLETELY AND ACCURATELY.  The IWGA contact person must be current in order for the club to receive any updates or information at all.  Also, PLEASE fill in an email address for the club and the contact person.  We are starting to send more and more information via email, so in order to receive this information, we need a correct email address.

Duenow Wins Third Championship at the Forever 39

The Forever 39 Match-Play Championship was played September 15-16 in Waverly at Centennial Oaks Golf Club.  The qualifying round kicked off the tournament to determine flights and matches.  Beth Duenow from St. Ansgar shot a low 35 on the par 36 Front 9.  Linda Laylin from Waterloo came in with an even par 36 for the second lowest round in the Championship flight.  The Forever 39 had six flights, with the sixth flight being a round robin between four players.  In the first round, Duenow beat Ila Gilbert, Ankeny by one hole.  Ginger Ahern, Emmetsburg defeated last year's Champion, Jill Blackwood from Burlington by one through ten holes.  Cindy Reinertsen, Waterloo beat Sheila Burton, Urbandale by two holes.  Finally for the last match, Linda Laylin defeated Carroll Dethrow, Nevada by one hole.  Jill Blackwood defeated Gilbert and Burton to be the consolation winner in the Championship flight.  Duenow defeated Ahern 3 & 2 in the second round and then faced Laylin who defeated Reinertsen by one.  The last match went 5 & 3 in favor of Duenow, who won the Championship flight for match play.  Penny Wood, Ottumwa, won the first flight, Judy McCarty, Fort Madison, won the second flight.  Third flight champion was Carole Merideth, Ottumwa, and fourth flight champion was Julie Lisle from Clarinda.  Donna Vroom, Pella, defeated everyone in the fifth flight and won.  The round robin winner was Louanna Pezzetti from Carlisle in the sixth flight.

Svanoe's Battle and Win the Playoff

It turned out to be a beautiful, sunny day at the Burlington Golf Club and the last group of wives and husbands were teeing off for their final round. As the scores started to file in, fifth place went to Julie and Mike Davidson, Ankeny, with a 149. Davidson's were last year's champions of the Iowa Wife Husband Championship. In fouth place came Burlington's natives, Jill and Tom Blackwood with a 149 as well. Randee and Jay Slings of Williamsburg claimed their third place spot with a 148. As the final groups came in, Janelle and Josh Carter, Bettendorf, and Barb and Phil Svanoe, Urbandale tied with a two-under 142. Everyone knew a sudden hole playoff was due. The Svanoe's and Carter's hit the tee on hole one in Burlington. The Carter's took Janelle's drive and the Svanoe's took Phil's drive, and both made par to advance to the second sudden death hole. On the second tee, both husbands gave the second shot to their wives. Janelle's second shot ended up in the sand by only inches, and Barb's second shot was down the middle. As play progressed, Phil Svanoe shot ended up within 15 feet of the hole, while the Carter's sand shot was over the green. Svanoe's had a two putt for par and the Carter's missed their putt for par. Svanoe's reigned as champions of the 2008 Iowa Wife Husband Champion. 

For the Super Senior Division, Lois and Jerry Graeve, Pleasant Hill , fired an 88 for round one and an 86 for round two for a low total of 174.  In Second place came Jean and Dick Gates from Clive with a 98 and an impressive 84, for a total of 182.  In third place was Sally and Jerry Derby, from Burlington, who shot a consistent 92-92 for a total of 184.  There were nine couples in the Super Senior Division this year.

Ames Wins Gross Division; Jones Park Takes Net Division

As three teams, Ames Golf & Country Club in Ames, Emerald Hills in Arnolds Park, and Wakonda in Des Moines, came in tied for first, all with 242's, the tie-breaker came into play by using the fourth score.  From the fourth score, Ames Golf & Country Club took first which included Jill Roof, Lisa Snyder, Elaine Thousand, and Paige Lynch; followed by Emerald Hills, and Wakonda.  In fourth place was Landsmeer in Orange City with a 244 and in fifth was Burlington Golf & Country Club in Burlington with a 249.  The medalist for the gross division was Fiona Watson from the Wakonda team in Des Moines with a low round of 68.

On the net division side, Jones Park Golf Course from Cedar Rapids won the net division, which included Susan Mitchell, Nancy Olberding, Kathy Zamastil, and Lori Wieneke, with an overall score of 203.  In second, came Pheasant Ridge in Cedar Falls with a 210, followed by Geneva in Muscatine with a 217.  In fourth came Nishna Hills from Atlantic with a 219, as well as Mason City Country Club in Mason City with a 219, which secured them into the fifth position.  The low round medalist went to Nancy Olberding from Jones Park Golf Course with a gross score of 75 and a net score of 57.

Pulsawath Sweeps the Iowa Am

From Day one to Day three, Pennapa Pulsawath from Ames was right on her game.  Pulsawath will be a junior and is also a member of the Iowa State golf team.  She started the first day with a 74, then fired a 70 on her second day, and to clench her championship, she rounded it off with a 75, for a three day total of 219.  Pulsawath was the medalist after two days with a two day total of 144 and was in contention the whole time with 2007 champion Kendra Hanson, Forest City, who finished second; two strokes behind Pulsawath.  Hanson’s three day total was 221, with three scores of 72-75 and a final round of 74.  Kim Weber, Bernard came right behind with a 76-79-71, for a total of 226 and in fourth was our own 2008 Junior Girls’ Champion, Kristin Paulson, Ottumwa with a 75-76-78, 229.  Tied for fifth place was Beth Duenow, St. Ansgar and Julie Bush from Cedar Rapids.  Duenow had a 3 day total of 230 as well as Bush with a total of 230.  Overall, for three days of the tournament there was beautiful weather and great scores at Bos Landen in Pella. 

This is Pulsawath’s first IWGA Amateur Championship and she said that it was nice to get some competitive play before she headed to the U.S. Am, which will be held at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon; August 4-7.  For Full results of the tournament, click here.  Upcoming events for the IWGA is the Wife-Husband Championship, September 5-8. 


Iowa Native Medalist at North & South Am

Jennie Arseneault, originally from Grinnell, but now at the University of Virginia, was medalist at the Women's North and South Amateur at Pinehurst in North Carolina yesterday.  Arseneault was 4-under for the tournament with a 70-71, for a total 141.  The North and South Am was played on the number 2 and 8 courses at Pinehurst.  Arseneault was also the winner of the Women's Western Amateur at Summergrove Golf Club in Newnan, Georgia on June 16-21 of this year.  Arseneault played in several IWGA championships and won the Women's Am three years in a row, from 2004 through 2006.  Congratulations Jennie!  Full results from North & South Am .

 


Iowa Girl's Compete in 4-State Championship

The lowest five scores from the Junior Girl's Championship in June competed in the 4-state championship against Nebraska, Missouri, and Kansas on June 30 -July 1 in Leawood, Kansas.  Amanda Butler (Lamoni), Katie Purcell (Ames), Katie Suckow (Waukee), Christy Wittmer (Hampton), and Susan Kirschenman (Huxley) compiled the Iowa team at the 4-State Championship.  The Iowa team finished with a two day total of 671.  Kirschenman was the low for the Iowa team with an 83-83 for a total of 166.  Behind her was Purcell with a 89-80, 169 and Wittmer with a 86-83, 169.  Butler finished with a two day total of 172 and Suckow with a total of 177.  Missouri defeated the other 3 teams with a 320-316, for a total score of 636.  They won the tournament by 10 strokes.  The standings for the tournament were Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas and Iowa.  To view the full results from the 4-State Championship, click here.


Paulson wins Junior Girl's Champion

Kristin Paulson of Ottumwa was this year's Iowa Junior Girl's Champion on June 9-10 at Vinton Country Club.  She came out in round one and shot a 69 and then followed up that round with a 71 on the last day.  Paulson led the field of 47 girls by four strokes to win it.  These girls definitely had an experience of a lifetime at Vinton Country Club.  Holes one and two were completely flooded during the first round of play, which brought the alternate holes into play.  The course played at a par 68 both days.  Behind Paulson was Katie Purcell (Ames) with a 69-75, Amanda Butler (Lamoni) with rounds of 74-72, and Sarah Paulson (Ottumwa) with 74-73.  No matter how wet the course was, these girls came to play and it shows.  The top five scores now transfer on to the Four State tournament in Kansas.  The top five girls that are able to go are Katie Purcell, Amanda Butler, Christy Wittmer, Susan Kirschenman, and Katie Suckow.  Vinton Country Club was more than accommodating to our Junior Girls, which made this tournament that much more enjoyable.  As for the 10-12 year old division Paige Van Dyk from Tama won with two nine hole scores of 49-45.  Second place was awarded to Haley Berry from Marion, with a 64-60 for her two day scores.  The 10-12 year olds played 9-holes each day and they both improved each day.  Results for the whole tournament can be found here.


Duenow Capture First Senior Am Championship

Beth Duenow, St. Ansgar, made her debut performance at the Iowa Women's Senior Am this past weekend.  She came out in round one and fired a 70, one under par and then followed it up with a 79 for the second round.  Duenow won low scored for round one and champion for the tournament.  Kathy Fortune of Rockwell City, was one stroke behind Duenow.  She fired a 76 for the first day, and then followed it up by a 3-over par 74 to finish out this championship.  The Senior Am was held June 23-24 at Brown Deer Golf Club in Coralville.  The par 71 course played 4,634 yards for the women at the red tees.  There were 54 women registered who were 50 years old and older and they competed against each other in a stroke play of 36 holes.  

The Super Senior Champion was Jill Blackwood, Burlington, who shot a 4-over par for a 75 on day one and for day two, she finished with an 80.  Second for the Super Senior division was Judy McCarty with a 78-79, for a two day total of 157.  The field was split in half with women who were 50-59 years and then those who were 60 years and older. 

There was a great turn out of women 70 years and older.  There were two awards for best scores; one in the division of 70-79 years and the other one was for best score for the 80 and older division.  Sonia McCunniff of Cedar Falls won best score for 70-79 years, with a 90-90 for an overall total of 180 for both days.  The 80 and older best score medal went to Eileen Van Horn of Urbandale, who had a 97-95 for a total of a 192.  For more results from the whole field, click here.


Duenow's Awarded Parent-Child Champions

Beth and Keith Duenow found themselves the champions of the State Parent-Child on Saturday, June 28th at Jester Park.  Beth is from St. Ansgar and her son, Keith is from Forest City.  The two together shot a 38-38 for the low score of 76.  The Duenow's were 4-over for the day and won the championship by one stroke.  Behind them tied for 2nd were Brooke and Rick Bachelder from Iowa City and Chad, Cedar Rapids, and Lisa Baker, Des Moines, both with a 77.  The Parent-Child Championship is played as an alternate shot between the parent and the child.  There were 34 parent-child teams that played this year. 

The winners in the Young Adult Division were Jon and Taylor Brown from Urbandale, with a 39-44 for an 83.  Alexa and Troy Arends, from Orange City, won the 8 & Under Division on the Executive Course at Jester Park with an 44-37, 81.  In the 9 & 10 Age Division on the Executive Course as well, Halle and Rob Randall from Ankeny won their division with a 36-34 for a 70 overall.  Full Results from the Parent-Child Championship can be found here.

  Q:  A player's ball lies in a hazard and while waiting for her opponent to hit, casually leans on his club in the hazard.  What is the ruling?

A: It is a two-stroke penalty because the player was not entitled to touch her club in the hazard before hitting.

B: There is no penalty, because she did not move any particles in the hazard.

C: The player has every right to be in the hazard to test it before addressing her ball.
